Is it the third Sunday of the month? Yes! That means I'm hosting at the B.B. Rover's open mic again. Lotsa fun.

Lots of acts at the Four Bullets Brewery in Richardson yesterday. The Happy Hour Ukes (with Ashley) kicked off the show, followed by Bevvy, a solo guitarist. Next up was Thickety Creek, followed by more Happy Hour Ukes, and wrapping up with a reunion of sorts of Drinks on the House.
A few times a year, the Austin Ukulele Society hosts a special uke-centric open mic at the Rattle Inn. They just seem to keep getting better.
Great acts all evening long! Helen and I performed "Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian" and my new song, "Destroy the Earth for Profit," both of which went over great. Kaye and I had a great night playing and singing at Rovers. I think it was our best performance as a duo so far. Too bad it happened in front of our smallest audience so far.
After our 7-9 gig, we drove to Twin Creeks Hall to catch the end of Lynette & Lefty's show there. They were fun as always, and it was a great way to end the evening. According to Jimmy Joe, his better half stayed home because she had sung her voice out earlier today at a regular nursing home gig. Apparently, cedar fever got to her.
She missed a great open mic at Rovers, including a few acts that followed me over from The Stomping Grounds, which now hosts a Sunday open mic from 4 to 7 nearby. Paul, Kaye and I performed at the Legacy again. We always enjoy playing there because the audience is so attentive and appreciative (in a non-monetary kind of way).
The second Thursday of the month is always my favorite Thursday thanks to the regular Austin Ukulele Society meeting. In honor of Valentine's Day this month, Bob chose the song "Love Hurts."
Shared two songs with Kaye tonight, plus a solo performance of "Caught Up Short Again" at the OMN for NeWorlDeli.
I had such a fun time last night playing at The Pearl in Lockhart, Texas. Great crowd, great music. I managed to play a nice mix of songs from my first CD and from the soon-to-be-released Honky Tonk Hymnal, and the wonderful people there seemed to really enjoy them all. They even asked me back on stage at the end of the night for a second mini-set.
The live music scene in Lockhart is blossoming, thanks in no small part to venue owners like Ronda Reagan and LAMA (Lockhart Area Music Association). Thanks to Grady Keenan for hosting the festivities last night. I played as part of the songwriter's showcase at Walburg tonight. I had intended to open with "Give Us This Day Our Honky Tonk," but accidentally launched into "Beer and Pretzels for Communion" instead. It went fine, but I'm pretty sure I played it the last time I was there.
Usually, I'm not overly fond of these song swaps. It means being on stage for nine songs, but only playing on three of them, plus having to wait for two songs before getting to play again. Makes it difficult to get any kind of flow with your song choices. Tonight, however, I decided not to worry about flow. My last two songs were my two newest: "Caught Up Short Again" and "Shoulders and Soul." Nobody was expecting these serious topics, and they both went over to huge applause. |
