Not sure if this is a record for me, but I feel pretty good about it. The Kaye Pasa Trio played three venues in two days: The Watercrest in Bryan, TX (on Friday), and the Barton Creek Farmers Market (top photo) and Patsy's Cowgirl Cafe (bottom photo), both in Austin on Saturday. For Sunday, Kaye and I played the last open mic of the summer at the Mellow Mushroom in Round Rock (now suspended until after football season), and later I played at B.B. Rover's Cafe & Pub in Austin to wrap up the weekend.

Had to put down the best dog in the world yesterday. Sunny (a.k.a. "Ultra Fire Sunshine") was no longer able to stand up without help. It was a difficult decision, and honestly one I probably should have made sooner, but thankfully, Will was here to help say good-bye.
After a short stint at an open mic at Quinn's in Round Rock, Kaye and I went to Hardtail's Bar & Grill in Georgetown for Bob Case's open mic.
Unlike our first time there a couple of weeks ago (with Paul), not all of the bikers were outback smoking, so this time I finally got to perform David Harbaugh's wonderful song "Hog Heaven" for bikers. They LOVED IT! I opened by challenging them to listen with single strums and then pointing at the biggest bikers in the place singing, "Hog Heaven (pause to point), Hog Heaven (point at the next guy), let's rally in Hog Heaven!" By the time I hit the fist chorus, they were hooked. Kaye joined me to sing harmony on "Guilty Pleasure," which proved to be another biker crowd favorite. I also played blues harp for Kaye on "Love Me Like a Man" and "Woman Who Makes You Smile." All in all, a great night. Twin Creeks Hall hosted the BEST MUSIC IN TOWN last night. Local acts included Chris Browder and Colin Boutwell, Lynette & Lefty, Deanne Rene, The Jerry Rigged Band, Firewater, David True and the Truebadours, and everyone’s favorite porch-stomp group, Clyde.
Getting to enjoy the evening with my old friend and songwriting partner David Harbaugh made it all seem extra special. The evening pulsed with nonstop music from 4PM to midnight as musicians and audience happily intermingled, creating a festival-like atmosphere. Groups scheduled to play late arrived early, and the acts who played early stayed late. Everyone got the chance to get to know these talented musicians before, during, and after their sets. Some of Austin’s best guitarists—including David “Lefty” Gardner, Marshall Hood, and Josh Ribakove—seized the opportunity to showcase their unique styles. Like a master chef with a full spice rack, each guitarist created his own perfect recipe seamlessly mixing blues, rock, country, and swing. One (or more or all) of these acts is going to “hit the big time” someday soon. When they do, last night’s crowd will be able to happily reminisce of the time they got to see them “back in the day.” Lastly, this post wouldn’t be complete without thanking Tom, the owner of Twin Creeks Hall, and Melissa (a.k.a. “Austin’s best barmaid”) for their efforts helping to make last night so wonderful. David True arranged the show as a benefit for friend Linda Gonzales, and Catfish Russ was the emcee. Really enjoyed hearing 13 year old Sho put on his first real show at a coffeehouse in east Austin. Fantastic uke player.
I always enjoy playing with my friends Kaye Reznick and Paul Teneyuque, but last night's show at B.B. Rovers was especially fun. Lots of friends stopped by, and the crowd was great.
I always enjoy watching The Better Halves (Jimmy Joe and Chrissie Natoli) perform, and when it's their turn to host the open mic at BB Rovers, I always try to go. On this particular night, Lynette & Lefty were there, too, and Jimmy Joe invited David (Lefty) Gardner to play a few songs with them to wrap up the evening. Lotsa fun.
The last time Kaye Pasa played here, we were completely unplugged. Turned out to be the biggest crowd we'd ever had there, and we may have strained our voices a little trying to be heard. This time, we plugged three mics into the Bose, but kept the instruments unplugged. Easier on the vocal cords, but still difficult for me to hear what Paul is playing and vice-versa.
Back to B.B. Rover's Cafe & Pub for another special Wednesday featuring the Kaye Pasa Trio. We had a slightly bigger crowd than last time, but most of them were Rover's regulars. Need to figure out how to get more people away from their couch potato activities and out to where the live music is happening.
After taking a week off, I went to Twin Creeks Hall tonight for the open mic hosted by Chris. Sadly only two other musicians showed to play, but on the plus side, I performed two mini-sets for a total of 14 songs.
