The Austin Ukulele Society Ensemble performed tonight at a wrap party for David Arquette and several other Hollywooders. Kathy Murray (pictured above) and I were both brazen enough to give Mr. Arquette copies of our respective CDs.

Performed at the second Lynette & Lefty's Variety Show, and as before, I had a lot of fun doing it. Managed to play a few of my newer songs, including: David Harbaugh's "When Willie Gets Behind the Beat," "Tryin' to be a Hippie," and "God Bless This Here Beer."
The worst of yesterday's storms passed south of my house here in Austin, but the rain and flooding got really bad east of Austin. A tornado touched down in Bryan, not too far from The Watercrest. The combination of tornado damage, widespread street flooding, and chance of more rain today led Judy to call me and cancel today's show.
It was going to be my first solo show there because Paul is still not well enough to travel or sing. I'll try to give The Watercrest a bonus show in July. Last night at the Lucky Lounge open mic, I test-drove "Can You Get Too Drunk?" and "God Bless This Here Beer." Lynette & Lefty played both songs with me; however, we'd never rehearsed GBTHB, which led to a couple of miscues. The miscues threw me for a loop, and I flubbed a couple of lines. Consequently, it didn't really get a fair showing.
On the plus side, CYGTD went over exceptionally well. I introduced the song as a philosophical question pondered by mankind since the discovery of inebriation. Three or four guys told me, "I love the get-too-drunk song" afterward. A just-turned-21-this-week kid suggested I reverse the order for the second verse to say "Can you get too stoned to enjoy getting drunk?" In fact, I tried that in a very early draft, but quickly ditched the idea because it sounded too contrived. After hearing Mr. Just-Out-Of-Diapers suggest it, I feel very good about my decision to NOT go that way. First rehearsal for the upcoming Lynette & Lefty Variety Show this Sunday at Iron Cactus. Lynette also took the opportunity to borrow a hot shower.
Billy hosted tonight's open mic at Rovers. I had planned to go to Twin Creeks Hall, but there it looked like some serious weather was out that way, so I stayed close to home.
Billy ended the open mic around 9:15, and I went home. I hadn't even made the turn on Oak Knoll when Diana sent me a text asking, "Where are you?" I went right back up there, and she, David Dunn, and self spent the rest of the evening together talking music. We played at The Legacy at Crystal Falls today. It was a completely unplugged set, no mics, no amp, no PA, and yet we had the biggest crowd we'd ever had there.
Playing unplugged as a soloist isn't that difficult, but in this setting, I couldn't hear Paul's guitar, which led to some flubbed rhythms. It was even worse whenever I turned to make eye contact with the extra audience on my side of the room. I think that's the reason Peter, Paul & Mary always stood around a single mic. Of course, Mary didn't play guitar, so that made the one mic thing easier. Harder to fit three guitarists around one mic. I remember reading years ago about the record industry term, sophomore slump. It refers to a common occurrence for star performers after their first big hit: The next album (or song) is almost always kind of a let-down.
Tonight was the second Wednesday for Kaye Pasa to perform at B.B. Rovers. We didn't play poorly, but somehow it wasn't as tight as last week's show. Hosted another great open mic night at B.B. Rovers, but the highlight of the evening for me was getting the chance to blow some blues while Kevin Marin played his new baritone uke (only his second time in public).
Tie-dye shirt? Check. Wire-rimmed glasses? Check. Long hair? Okay, that was an easy one. Yes, I finally made it to Hippie Daze. I missed the first two years due to scheduling conflicts, but I made it to Year 3.
The Wizard Sisters (Lisa Fancher, Wendy Hale Davis, Jay Dee Hicks, and Eddie Block) opened the show, followed by the bluegrass group The Holdouts. My favorite porch-stomp group, CLYDE, hosted and wrapped up the evening. |
