Several friends met at Dino's open mic to turn the regularly scheduled open mic into a musical wake for Whit.
Kaye and I found out earlier today that Whit Kinslow died over the weekend. He was a regular on the open mic scene with a beautiful baritone voice.

It's becoming a far-too regular occurrence: On a night that I'm not scheduled to host Rover's open mic, I get a call right at 7 PM that the scheduled host didn't show up. With no time to prepare, I rush up to Rovers, hastily set up the sound system, and then spend the next three or four hours there.
Making last night's unexpected pinch-hitting worse, my car wouldn't start at the end of the night, and I had to bum a ride home (thanks, Mikey!). Second trip to Bryan without Pablo, but Kaye Pasa had a great show anyway. Also was my first chance to wear my new hat. Apparently, I look good in black. Must be the way the grey hair complements it.
Also of note: Oct 28 is the birthday (observed) of my 12-string Breedlove guitar. Actually, it's the anniversary of the day in 2012 when I traded an acoustic-electric bass for it. A good day, indeed. Second day trip to Dallas in three days. Got up at 5 AM, drove to Waco. Loaded my instruments and equipment in Richard Leslie's car, and he drove us to Dallas where we were guests of the Happy Hour Ukes. Had a brief rehearsal with David Harbaugh, then went to Four Bullets Brewery in my childhood home town of Richardson (North Dallas County). Played a good hour long set, and the performers and audience really enjoyed it. Got back to Austin around 9:30 PM. Made for a long day, but it was a lot of fun.
Drove my mom to Dallas yesterday to go to the State Fair. Saw the LIght Crust Doughboys perform there, but spent most of the day walking...slowly...through ridiculously crowded spaces.
Long drive home. Went to bed at unprecedented time of 9:30. Woke up this morning, still exhausted. Saw Oma off to Bryan. Decided to change the signature line on my emails to read: "Honky Tonk Hymnalist." Did it. Might need a nap. Kaye and I played without Paul at Rovers tonight. Only a handful of people there, including my mother who was in town for a visit. Had a decent time performing, and Kaye and I are getting more comfortable as a duo. Still, we both know we're better with Paul than without him. I really need to learn some lead licks.
Spent the weekend playing hither, thither, and yon. Thursday was the monthly AUS meeting. On Friday, the Kaye Pasa Trio played at The Legacy at Crystal Falls. Saturday, I performed with the Austin Uke Ensemble at United Methodist Church, and Sunday was my turn to host at B.B. Rover's open mic night.
Went to the studio yesterday to record with Kaye and Paul for the KPT sampler. I only managed a quick harmonica bit before feeling decidedly sick. Went home and spent the rest of the day in bed alternating between shivering and sweating. I was sure this was Day One of the flu or something, but by Wednesday morning, I was feeling better. Wednesday afternoon, it was like I'd never felt bad. Weird little virus, I guess.
Took Lynette & Lefty (Lynette Wolfe and David Gardner) to the studio today. Lefty laid down some fantastic guitar solos for "When Willie Gets Behind the Beat," and the two of them helped bring "Girl with Upright Bass" and "Lead Me Not" to life, too.
Performed with the Tuesday Uke Group (TUG) at Hope Presbyterian Church this evening. Afterward, several of us went to the Iron Cactus to see Lynette & Lefty.
