Memorial + lotsa road time

1/28/2017

Drove my mom to Huntsville today for Marla Jean's memorial service. Lots of family there that I hadn't seen in quite a while. I gave a short speech during the service itself, but couldn't stop from tearing up.

After the visitation, I decided to let Will and Kati take Oma back to Bryan (it was on their way to Georgetown). I took the opportunity for a long drive to Dallas to visit with Harbaugh. Gave him a CD of the pre-mastered HTH, and we played a few new songs for each other.

Stopped briefly in Waco to drop off a second CD at Ricahrd's place. He and Aline were out for the evening, but we'd already discussed a drop point.

Got back to Austin around 11 PM. Would have been sooner, but decided to stop and "rest my eyes" (read "catnap") for a few minutes in a shopping center parking lot in Georgetown. All in all, a very cathartic road trip for me.

Second solo show at Watercrest

For the second time in as many months, I performed as a solo act at Watercrest. This time, it was due to me staying the night with my mom before driving her to Huntsville the next day for my mother-in-law's memorial service. Show went fine, but I'll be glad to finally get some closure on Marla Jean. I did manage to play "Grandma's Star," her favorite of my songs, without choking up with tears.

Today, Tommy and I completed the final mix-downs (24-bit) of the 10 songs for the Honky Tonk Hymnal. We'll do the mastering of the album a week from Saturday. Hoping David and Richard can come down for that, too.

Happy to play between Happy Hour Ukes' sets at the Four Bullets Brewery in my old home town of RIchardson, Texas today. Barely outran the storm front blowing from the NW that evening coming back to Austin, but worth the trip in good beer, good music, and good times.

Again, I forgot to take any pics, but this was an incredible night. Not counting myself as host, there were 15 acts on the list, including: Overdue Bill, Kaye Reznick, David Gardner, Jay Dee Hicks, Lynette & Lefty, Aegean, and many more that I can't call to mind at the moment. Didn't finish until almost 11 o'clock.

Katie Shore of Asleep at the Wheel came by the studio today to add her fiddle magic to "Morning Glory." Combined with Chip Dolan's great piano, this is a wonderful track. I'm getting very excited about launching this new CD.
