Couldn't make it to Star Co Coffee House Tuesday due to a family emergency. I hope to get back on track by Feb 13. In fact, I'm going for a two-fer: Early evening with the Austin Ukulele Society, followed by a quick set at Sunset Bar & Grill in Cedar Park.
I had fun at the 1920s costume party on Friday, but as the evening wore on, I began to feel old and out of place. Mainly, I felt alone.
As I stood there enjoying the music of Atlas Maior and the noise of the crowd, I found myself regretting that Sheri and I never did stuff like this when we were young. We always thought we'd have time later. Last night I went to the One-2-One Club to see Kathy and the Kilowatts. I didn't really feel like going out, but I thought if I forced myself to do, I'd fell better about it later. Despite their uptempo R&B and rock-a-billy sound, I felt positively blue. With no one to even share a table, I left just before they ended their first set. On the way home, I stopped at BBR for a beer. David Dunn and Diana were there, and they invited me to sit with them. We ended up chatting all night as we enjoyed the music and stories of Bob Cheevers. It kinda saved my whole weekend. Saw the always entertaining Jezebel Jones last night at Austin's favorite speakeasy, The Firehouse. The club itself hides behind a fake bookshelf, and it helps to know the secret password to get in. The speakeasy atmosphere worked especially well last night because of the 1920s-themed costume party. Jezebel and her partner PH switched seamlessly from guitar to ukulele throughout the set. She played a few songs from her album, Queen of the Devil's Rodeo and a couple of interesting covers: "(I've Got Spurs That) Jingle Jangle Jingle" with lyrics tweaked for a female perspective, and a delightfully dark version of "This Little Light of Mine" played in a minor key. Atlas Maior was next, and their modern fusion of jazz and Middle Eastern-influenced music provided the perfect swirling soundtrack to the rest of the evening. Sort of like being in a movie montage. The whole show benefited the Lilith Fund for Reproductive Equity. Oh, and did I mention it was a costume party? Here I am as a 1920s stage door johnny. Thank, Costume World.
