BIG NEWS at Whitestone OMN

Performed (twice) tonight at Whitestone Brewery's open mic in Cedar Park. Diana took the pic above. (Thanks, Di.)

Played a few of my regulars, but added two new ones tonight: my new song "Where Alligators Dance" and the perfect, no-introduction-or-instructions-needed sing-along, "Minnie the Moocher." Great fun.

THE BIG NEWS OF THE NIGHT, however, was that a young lady in the audience told me she had heard "Don't Dallas My Austin" on the radio recently. I asked her if it was Sun Radio, and she said she thought so.

Will (and 11 other students) gave their individual Capstone presentations this evening. It was very interesting to watch as each had dissected different works of literature with very different perspectives of how to interpret them.

Kaye and I got to hear 2/5 of CLYDE (Jay Dee Hicks and Doug Martin) before we took the stage at Twin Creeks Hall tonight. It was a near-perfect evening for it.

Thickety Creek "rehearsal"

David and Richard came to town for a few hours of "rehearsal," although a better description might have been a song swap. Of course, we couldn't do anything until after lunch at B.B. Rover's Cafe & Pub.

With L&L at Iron Cactus

I wish I had a photo to commemorate this evening playing with Lynette & Lefty again at the Iron Cactus North in Austin. I shared the stage with them from 8-10, and as per usual, we all had a lot of fun. I wish the crowd had been bigger, but those who came really enjoyed it.

The Fan Appreciation Party concert, (L-R): Terry Kufner, Dave Jutras, David Harbaugh, John Davenport
On April 20, 2009, I played for the first time: on a real stage, in front of (some) strangers, bass guitar (for some songs), and with a drummer. Drinks on the House called it our Fan Appreciation Party, and it was the only time we lived up to our name because we bought a keg for the show.

Although this staged photo shows me on Dave Jutras' bass guitar, I believe "Leave a Message at the Tone" was the only song in which I played bass and Dave played drums. The rest of the night, the co-owner of the Jam Station played drums for us. We had never practiced with him, and I had never shared a stage with a drummer. I remember being surprised that I could feel the beat through the floor of the stage.

Sheri would have loved this! Will and the core members of the Southwestern University Jazz Band opened the show with Will giving the count-in. Will had five solos in the show, and he was good!

Tuesday Uke Group (TUG)

I don't usually post about TUG on this site; however, I think that might be a mistake on my part. We jokingly refer to TUG as a "dangerous splinter group of the Austin Ukulele Society," but in fact we're just uke enthusiastic who think one meeting a month isn't enough.

The (almost) Rained-Out Open Mic

4/17/2016

I guess the forecast scared away a lot of folks tonight. We "only" got 3.75 inches of rain in NW Austin, and as it happened, there was no rain at all this evening. After months of having the highest attendance of all BB Rover's open mic hosts, tonight's show only had six or seven performers. On the plus side, everybody got to play twice, self included.

Played Giddy-Ups with L&L

Myself on harp, David "Lefty" Gardner on guitar, and Lynette Wolfe on bass at Giddy-Ups in south Austin
I have so much fun playing with these two. Tonight was my first time to perform at Giddy-Ups, and the crowd was wonderfully receptive. Can't remember all we played, but I'm pretty sure it included: "Last Chance Tattoo," "Hot Pepper Tamale," "Girl with the Upright Bass," "Lost in Her Eyes," and my "Rocky Mountain High-Redneck Mother Medley." Good times.

Didn't realize until later that today was the anniversary of the last show for Drinks on the House, and the only show with the final five members sharing a stage (Dave Jutras, David Harbaugh, Richard Leslie, Terry Kufner, and myself). We played the Dallas Hilton for the Texas Distant Learning Association.
