Paul and I had a great time performing again at The Watercrest in Bryan. We're already looking forward to our next gig there, February 27.
It 's been a while since I played harmonica in public, but I felt pretty good about my performance. Paul was near perfect, as usual, and we seemed more in sync with each other. It was a good show and well-received, too.

Great fun at B.B. Rovers last night. Not quite as many acts as last Sunday, but still a good turnout for some great songs.
After I opened the show, the baritone uke duo from Dallas, David Harbaugh and Don Aspermonte took the stage along with Steve, a Dallas-area fiddle player. Many of my favorite local singer-songwriters performed, including: David Patrick Dunn, Kaye Reznick, Paul Teneyuque, Bourland, and The Better Halves. Byrd and Street also attended, but Tommy was fighting a cold, so they didn't play. Big open mic night at B.B. Rovers last night. We had performances by Mel Mason, Paul Teneyuque, Overdue Bill, Kaye Reznick, David True, Carlos Rumbaut, David Patrick Dunn, Wendy Hale Davis, Kathy Murray and Bill "Monster" Jones, and several more. We finished the night with a mini-concert by Clyde.
If this upcoming Saturday's show goes as well as this, it's gonna be a big hit. Thanks again to everyone who came to play and/or listen last night. If they ever make fun illegal, nights like this will get you life without parole. Spent the past three days at Byrd House Studio with Tommy Byrd (left) working on my CD. Friend and performance partner Paul Teneyuque (right) added bass and backing vocals to a few tracks yesterday.
Plan for Jimmy Joe Natoli to add his guitar wizardry to a few tracks soon. All in all, I'm very pleased with the project so far. Played at the NeWorlDeli open mic night for the first time. The place was packed with some incredible musicians, singers, and...well, me.
I opened with "Waitin' at the Station," which went over fine, especially since I used the mid-song break to mention the 46 rhymes. For a change of pace, I followed it with "Yo Quiero Mas Cerveza," the parody of "Hot Pepper Tamale." Because I followed Carlos, my Spanish song went over wonderfully. Wrapped things up with "Folsom Prison Blues in F#-Minor," which was a big hit again. I definitely want to pay the licensing fee to put this one on my CD. Spent the past two days in Byrd House Studio. Except for creating a scratch vocal and guitar track for "Don't Dallas My Austin," I spent the time working as the producer.
John Traphagan added percussion to three songs, and Chip Dolan added keyboards. All in all, a very productive two days. Had a great time playing at Twin Creeks Hall's OMN tonight. My favorite porch-stomp group, Clyde was the official host tonight, and I got to perform with Paul, then solo, and later with Clyde. So much fun!
On the cuatro, I backed up Paul on his songs, "Lady Lovely" and "Talking to Myself." Playing solo on my 12er, I started with "Waitin' at the Sation," but for a change of pace, my next three selections were covers: "Folsom Prison Blues in F#-Minor," "Mary Rode Jospehs's Ass," and "The Last Honky Tonk." Finally, playing with Clyde, I did a comedy version of "Our House," "Roller Derby Queen," and "Wagon Wheel." Pictured above L-R: Lisa Fancher (harmony), The John Davenport (12-string and lead vocal), Jay Dee Hicks (cajon), Josh Ribacove (mandolin), and Tommy Dykes (6-string electric fiddle!). NOTE: Eddie Block played bass, but he's partially hidden behind John. Thanks again to Josh Ribacove for inviting me to his New Years Eve party. It was the most fun I've had on December 31 since 1999 turned into Y2K.
I opened with "Waitin' at the Station," which went over okay. Next, I played "Eulogy," and without prompting, the crowd sang along with the choruses. I got chills! I wrapped up my set with "Folsom Prison Blues in F#-Minor," which they loved. |
