Last night at the Lucky Lounge open mic, I test-drove "Can You Get Too Drunk?" and "God Bless This Here Beer." Lynette & Lefty played both songs with me; however, we'd never rehearsed GBTHB, which led to a couple of miscues. The miscues threw me for a loop, and I flubbed a couple of lines. Consequently, it didn't really get a fair showing.
On the plus side, CYGTD went over exceptionally well. I introduced the song as a philosophical question pondered by mankind since the discovery of inebriation. Three or four guys told me, "I love the get-too-drunk song" afterward.
A just-turned-21-this-week kid suggested I reverse the order for the second verse to say "Can you get too stoned to enjoy getting drunk?" In fact, I tried that in a very early draft, but quickly ditched the idea because it sounded too contrived. After hearing Mr. Just-Out-Of-Diapers suggest it, I feel very good about my decision to NOT go that way.
